Kentucky. Where the women are stronger than any prairie violet.

All this to say, I have a huge family. And that family gets together on the Saturday before Christmas every year. We’ve done it for at least 35 years, probably a lot longer. But one of the highlights of this event is always playing old tunes with my Uncle.

His voice sounds like a cross between Hank Williams and Buck Owens. Not a bad combo if you ask me. And he can rattle off about any old country song you can think of. So every year we sit around for a few hours and pull out some classics, butcher the time out of them, and smile like we just got away with something we shouldn’t have done. He’ll teach me some old George Jones gem from the jukebox; I’ll show him a cut or two from SonVolt or RA. We meet in the middle somewhere around Dwight Yoakum. It’s always something I look forward to.

He’s having a hernia operation two days before the festivities this year. Not a big deal as far as surgeries go, but he may not get to make the trek down from up north. Will just depend on how he feels. But I talked with him for a minute or two today and…something tells me he’ll be there if he has to steal an ambulance and cross state lines to do it.

I really hope so. Sure could use some Boxcar Willy to kick off the holidays right and proper.

whiskeywednesday:

WHISKEY WEDNESDAY’S WHISKEY OF THE WEEK:...

whiskeywednesday:

WHISKEY WEDNESDAY’S WHISKEY OF THE WEEK: Elijah Craig 18 Year

Package: The grand bottle of grand aged liquor!

Smell: A dry, oakey nose with a bit of leather and char. The nose is oily and has hints of the earth in it. Rye is there with a small amount of spicy aromas.

Taste: Big sweet oak. Not vanilla nor corn but oak. Leather and fat, syrupy toffee next. Crisp-burnt sugar. Oak again, drying out. Then a last flash of honey and char. Full and rich.

Finish: I cannot get over this finish. It has changed every 5 min.

So far:

Heavy Smoked oak and Leather
Smoked light oak and light leather
Vanilla and smoked oak with light leather and corn with pepper
Strong vanilla with some fruit and then smoked oak… leather is almost gone.
Corn, vanilla, smoked and oak… the smoke has strengthened again..
Last taste is sweat molasses and cream… just incredible

Price: $50. Now i know i know what you’re thinking, “damn thats a lot for a whiskey!” but listen, if you’re going to spend money on a 18 year you mind as well do it right. And this is what i call “doin’ it right” Plus its the holidays. Treat yourself.

Rating: 5 out of 5 shots. We all know how much I like elijah craig 12 year. Cheap, delish and perfect for straight, or mixed. I would not recommend using the 18 year for any mixed drink but mostly because the idea of it sharing space in my glass with another liquid is almost insulting.

RECOMMENDATION: LISTEN TO JOHNNY CASH AND DRINK THE FUCK OUT OF THIS.

Excellent recommendation. Bourbon auto reblog.

crbrown3:

NNMM: Ok, first of all, this may be the first instance of noisecore and the Civil War in the same sentence. Win. You’ll be happy to know, I had/have nothing to do with any of that. Though I would be interested to hear Sonic Youth do a version of Cumberland Gap. In answer here is an excerpt from a waaaay old post which I think one person “liked.”

In 2000, I almost entered graduate school. The weekend before I planned to enroll, I ran into an old friend Pat Haney. I knew Pat from his infamous open mic nights at the Baker Street Café, and he knew me from my days with Flux (grunge band) and a jazz outfit called the Mystery Machine. The timing was perfect. He had an indie recording contract and was doing some light touring regionally. I postponed grad school and happily hopped on board. For the next two years we toured across the country. One night we’d play for a few thousand at a large club in Texas, the next night we’d play a shithole somewhere in Chattanooga. We shared bills with Jack Ingram, Billy Joe Shaver, the Derailers, Bruce Robison, John Hyatt and tons of other Americana acts all across the country. Mostly we travelled in vans, but occasionally there was a bus underneath us (Playing the Continental Club in Houston once, I walked out to the bus and Billy Gibbons was kicked back on the couch—if you don’t know who that is, go to the library). Though the money was less than ideal, I loved every second of it. It also opened doors for me to play with folks like Curtis Burch, Scott Holt, Homemade Water, and Tim Krekel.

Along the way I got to do quite a bit of recording. We did a version of Waitin’ Around to Die for an album called Poet: a Tribute to Townes Van Zandt (again go to the library if you don’t know who that is). The album had Willie Nelson, Lucinda Williams, John Prine, Emmylou, Steve Earle, Guy Clark and other luminaries. We were the only “unknowns.” It was nominated for a Grammy but Bob Dylan’s Love and Theft record took home the little gold gramophone. Hey, if you’re gonna lose a Grammy, wouldn’t you want to lose to Bob Dylan? The most bizarre session I ever did was a Ford jingle by Jack Ingram. At that time, Jack wasn’t all over CMT and country radio. He was a well known in Texas, but still drove a crappy Dodge van to all his gigs. Bottom line is he wanted a new van, so late one night he wrote a jingle for Ford. They didn’t buy it at the time, though now he might earn another listen.

By 2003 I began to grow restless. I wanted to be a bit more grounded, and try something new. So I went back grad school to become a folklorist (needless to say, money wasn’t involved in this decision). What do I do as a folklorist? I help communities document and present their history and traditions. This is an actual profession with degree programs at WKU, UCLA, IU, and Penn. There’s even a professional society and everything, www.afsnet.org. Many of us work in State Arts agencies or universities. But some of us work in Humanities Councils (me) or cultural resource management offices. Still others work for US Army intelligence, the Smithsonian, and museums large and small across the country. The only folklorist in pop culture…the comic book guy from the Simpsons.

Ironically, moving to Nashville all but drove a stake in my musical life. Most of the folks here want to tour, get record deals, or starve to death in the process. I’m just not that interested anymore. What I am interested in is finding some folks to play with a couple of times a month for pocket change and laughs. Find me some folks like that who sound like Ryan Adams and Jane’s Addiction rolled into clusterfuck of twang and I’m your man.

blush...

OK, a couple of y’all just turned an otherwise really shitty day, into sunshine and rainbows. Thanks for the boost.

Juicy stuff

FS: Hi. I don’t even know your real name. So what is it?

NNMM: Going straight to the naughty stuff eh? That cat was out of the bag awhile ago and isn’t exactly a state secret. It’s Paul.

FS: I don’t have a formspring because I am confident that no one will use it. So because you are worried that no one will, I decided to write you just so that someone did. :)

NNMM: Thanks for the pity post.

Sen. LieberNelsnowe: That’s dead on arrival.

Democratic base: There’s strong support for X.

Sen. LieberNelsnowe: I don’t support it and there aren’t enough votes anyway. Maybe I’ll consider a Jiggered X.

Democratic base: We can’t accept a Jiggered X. How about an opti-X?

Sen. LieberNelsnowe: We need to slow down and get this right. I think maybe I can support an opti-X.

Democratic base: Yay! We no longer demand X. Opti-X it is!

Sen. LieberNelsnowe: I cannot support Opti-X.

Sen. LieberNelsnowe: I cannot support Jiggered X. How about Expandicare?

Democratic base: (grrrr) Fine, that has some merit. We no longer demand X or opti-X or Jiggered opti-X. Instead, we demand Expandicare!

Sen. LieberNelsnowe: Sorry, I can’t support Expandicare.

Democratic base: What! Why?

Sen. LieberNelsnowe: You accepted it, there must be something wrong with it. Besides, I never said I’d vote for it.

Democratic base: But you suggested it.

Sen. LieberNelsnowe: I suggest a lot of things. Like this: drop Expandicare and I’ll strongly consider not filibustering.

Democratic base: Yay! Let’s do it.
